Project Outline
Unitypanda is an experiment in the peer production of knitted pandas by online and offline communities. It is inspired by a 1942 pattern commemorating Chinaʼs gift of a pair of ʻUnity Pandasʼ to the US after the bombing of Pearl Harbour. Uniting two very distinct communities, knitters from local Age Concern day centres and online knitting groups will collaborate to produce the 22 parts of each Unitypanda. In the spirit of Web 2.0 collaboration, individuals determine their level of participation according to their skills and time commitment and advice flows openly between experienced and novice knitters via social media channels.
Unitypanda is funded by the Arts Council England and Longhouse.
